Every note has a 5th interval. The 5th is the note that is "7 half steps higher."

Note that, tuned D-A-D (technically, tuned 1-5-8 in any key), every fret of the middle string is the fifth of the note of that fret on the bass string. The mountain dulcimer is like a slide rule for calculating fifths. That's why bar chords and "L-shaped" chords work so well at every fret. Roots and their fifths sound pretty when played together.
