To Lucille: I like to use a combination of all that you listed in a song. It adds variety and makes it interesting to listen to.

When there were players of different levels in an ensemble group I once joined, the novice players played chords in the lower register, the intermediate players played chords in mostly the middle register, and the more advanced players played in the upper register. (There was tab for each part.) We chose our own parts according to our playing levels. When we arranged music, it worked the same way.

If anyone has further theory questions, feel free to e-mail me.I'll do my best to demystify the fog around something that really is very helpful. You do have to be able to count to thirteen. No other requriements.

Hey everyone, Sorry I missed the forum tonight. I ended up being out of town and just got back a little bit ago. I too would be more than happy to help anyone out with questions about chords and the theory that goes with them. (I'm one of those music nerds who actually ENJOYS studying music theory. :P ) Feel free to send me a message if you have questions. :D

Charts

Postby Jeff Hames on Thu Mar 13, 2008 8:59 am

I found these charts on the web. Here are the linkes. I don't have these so I don't know much about them, but they look pretty easy to read and understand.

The Harmony Wheel:

The Nashville Number System:

The Dulcimer Shoppe also carries chord charts:

If I find any more charts I'll post updates.
